The Complete Guide to GLP-1 Support Supplements
Medically reviewed by Dr. Richard Dentico, MD · August 11, 2026

GLP-1 support supplements are best organized by goal, not by ingredient list. Whether you take semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) or tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), the useful stack falls into five categories: foundation nutrition for the gaps that open when you eat less, muscle preservation while you lose weight, energy and recovery for the adjustment months, hair and skin support during rapid change, and digestive support for a slowed gut.
One thing to be clear about up front: none of these supplements cause weight loss. That comes from your medication together with diet and exercise, as demonstrated in the STEP trials for semaglutide and the SURMOUNT trials for tirzepatide. Supplements exist to support your body through the process.
This guide walks through all five goals, explains why each ingredient earns its spot, and answers common safety questions, including what vitamins should not be taken with Mounjaro. Bring the final list to your prescriber or pharmacist before you start anything new.
What are GLP-1 support supplements?
GLP-1 support supplements are ordinary, well-established nutrients — vitamins, minerals, protein-adjacent compounds, fiber, probiotics — chosen specifically for the situation a GLP-1 medication creates. That situation has three defining features: you eat substantially less food (which makes what you do eat matter more), you lose weight quickly, and your digestion slows down.
Each feature has predictable consequences. Eating less means lower intake of B vitamins, iron, zinc, magnesium, and omega-3s. Losing weight quickly puts lean muscle at risk and commonly triggers temporary hair shedding. Slower digestion brings constipation, nausea, and shifting gut comfort. The five goals below map directly onto those consequences, which is also how our five bundles are organized.
Goal 1: Foundation nutrition — the non-negotiable base
If you take nothing else, this is the layer that matters for nearly every GLP-1 user. The core pieces:
- A comprehensive multivitamin with B12, folate, and zinc — and iron only if your provider confirms it is appropriate for you, since iron should be matched to lab work rather than taken by default. These support energy metabolism, red blood cell formation, immune function, and hair and skin — and they are the nutrients most likely to run low on a shrunken plate. This is the honest answer to "what are the best vitamins to take while on GLP-1": the basics, done consistently.
- Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA). Support cardiovascular health and skin, and almost nobody eats enough fatty fish on a suppressed appetite.
- Magnesium glycinate. Supports muscle and nerve function and restful sleep; covered in depth below.
- Vitamin D3 with K2. D3 supports bone health and immune function, and intake from food is minimal for most people; K2 is paired with it to support normal calcium utilization.
- NAC (N-acetylcysteine). A precursor your body uses in normal glutathione production. (Electrolytes matter on a GLP-1 too — mild dehydration drives a surprising share of early headaches and fatigue — but they are not in this bundle, so source one separately.)
Who it's for: everyone on a GLP-1 medication, from week one. If you take Ozempic specifically, our companion piece on supplements to take with Ozempic goes deeper on this foundation layer.
Goal 2: Muscle preservation — protecting what the scale can't see
Rapid weight loss does not distinguish fat from muscle unless you make it. Without deliberate protein intake and resistance training, a meaningful share of lost weight can be lean mass. We cover the mechanics in our article on GLP-1 muscle loss.
The supplement support for this goal:
- Creatine monohydrate. The most-studied sports supplement there is; supports muscle strength and performance during resistance training at 3 to 5 grams daily. Hydrate well while taking it, and check with your provider first if you have any kidney concerns.
- Grass-fed whey protein isolate. Helps you reach a protein target when a suppressed appetite makes food alone difficult. Whey is naturally rich in leucine — the amino acid that triggers muscle protein synthesis — so adequate protein covers most of what a separate BCAA supplement would. (Collagen is in the Hair & Skin bundle, not this one.)
Who it's for: anyone losing weight faster than about a pound a week, and everyone doing resistance training. For the full plan — protein targets, training, and timing — see the muscle preservation protocol.
Goal 3: Energy and recovery — for the adjustment months
Fatigue is one of the most common complaints in the first months on semaglutide or tirzepatide. Some of it is simple math — you are running on fewer calories — and some of it is the adjustment period. Foundation nutrition and hydration fix a large share of it; this layer is for people who want additional support.
- CoQ10, alpha lipoic acid, and acetyl L-carnitine. Each is involved in the cellular machinery that turns food into usable energy.
- Nicotinamide riboside (an NAD+ precursor). NAD+ is a coenzyme central to cellular energy production, and precursor supplements support those pathways. (Ashwagandha and lion's mane were considered and removed on our medical reviewer's advice, so they are not in this bundle.)
Who it's for: people past the first month whose energy has not rebounded despite decent food, fluid, and sleep. Start with our GLP-1 fatigue guide first; for many people, closing gaps in fluid, electrolyte, and B-vitamin intake is where the most noticeable difference comes from.
Goal 4: Hair and skin — support through rapid change
Hair shedding a few months into rapid weight loss is common and usually temporary — a stress response called telogen effluvium, not a drug side effect in the classic sense. Skin, meanwhile, is adjusting to a changing body and reduced protein and fat intake. Our GLP-1 hair loss guide explains the timeline.
- A hair support formula with biotin. Supplies nutrients involved in normal hair and nail maintenance. Important note: this bundle includes biotin from two sources, so the combined dose is higher than a single label — pause high-dose biotin 2 to 3 days before any blood work, because it can interfere with thyroid and hormone lab tests.
- Multi-collagen peptides. Provide the amino-acid building blocks for hair and skin structure.
- Iron is not in this bundle. Iron status plays a role in hair health, but iron should only be taken with a lab result showing you need it. Ask your provider for a ferritin test first, and if you do take iron, separate it from thyroid medication by at least 4 hours.
Who it's for: people noticing shedding or skin changes, typically from month two onward — alongside, not instead of, adequate protein.
Goal 5: Digestion — working with a slower gut
GLP-1 medications work partly by slowing gastric emptying. That helps you feel full, but it is also why constipation, nausea, and bloating are the most common side effects across Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound.
- Ginger root extract. One of the most traditional and best-studied botanicals for supporting digestive comfort and easing occasional queasiness.
- A multi-fiber prebiotic blend. Adds fiber back when eating less means eating less of it, supporting regularity. Take any fiber supplement 1 to 2 hours away from all medications, and with plenty of water.
- A 16-strain probiotic with FOS. Supports a balanced gut microbiome while your eating pattern and gut motility change.
Who it's for: nearly everyone at some point. Practical companions: our guides to constipation relief on GLP-1s and managing nausea.

What vitamins should not be taken with Mounjaro?
The honest answer: there is no vitamin with an absolute ban alongside Mounjaro, Zepbound, or any GLP-1 medication. The real cautions are about timing, testing, and quality — not forbidden ingredients.
- Timing. Iron reduces absorption of thyroid medication; keep them at least 4 hours apart. Bulk fiber supplements can slow absorption of any oral medication; keep a 1-to-2-hour buffer.
- Testing. High-dose biotin can distort thyroid and hormone lab results — and our Hair & Skin bundle includes biotin from two sources, so the combined dose is higher than a single label. Pause it 2 to 3 days before labs and tell your provider you use it. More in our GLP-1 lab tests guide.
- Quality. The products actually worth avoiding are stimulant-heavy "fat burner" formulas and unvetted proprietary blends that hide doses; they add nausea and sleep risk with no offsetting benefit.
The single best safeguard is a pharmacist review of everything you take, including gummies and powders.
Tirzepatide, semaglutide, and B12
If you use compounded tirzepatide or semaglutide, you may have noticed B12 listed in the formulation and wondered whether it is part of the mechanism. It is not. Pairing tirzepatide with B12 (or semaglutide with B12) is a formulation choice by compounding pharmacies: B12 is inexpensive, water-soluble, and supports normal energy metabolism at a time when dietary intake of it often falls.
B12 does not cause weight loss, and any dosing chart for a compounded product should come from your compounding pharmacy or prescriber, because concentrations vary between pharmacies. If you take B12 separately, common over-the-counter forms are cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin, with labeled amounts typically between 100 and 1,000 mcg daily.
Why magnesium glycinate is the form people choose on Mounjaro
Search interest in "Mounjaro magnesium" is high for a practical reason: magnesium intake drops when leafy greens, nuts, and whole grains get crowded off a smaller plate, and magnesium supports things people on GLP-1s care about — normal muscle and nerve function and restful sleep.
Form matters more than usual here. Magnesium oxide and citrate can loosen stools, which is a poor match for a gut already being remodeled by tirzepatide. Magnesium glycinate is well absorbed and generally the gentlest common form on a sensitive stomach — which is why it is the version we include in the Foundation Bundle.
Frequently Asked Questions
What vitamins should I take while on Mounjaro?
Start with foundation nutrition: a comprehensive multivitamin with B12, folate, and zinc, plus omega-3s, magnesium glycinate, vitamin D3 with K2, and NAC. Iron only if your provider confirms it after lab work, since it should be matched to your labs rather than taken by default; electrolytes matter too, but our bundles don't include one, so source it separately. Add goal-specific support — muscle, energy, hair and skin, digestion — based on what you are actually experiencing, and confirm the list with your prescriber.
What are the best vitamins to take with Wegovy?
The best vitamins to take with Wegovy are the same as for any semaglutide product: a comprehensive multivitamin with B12, folate, and zinc, plus vitamin D — and iron only if your provider confirms it is appropriate for you, since iron should be matched to lab work rather than taken by default. Supplements to take with Wegovy beyond vitamins include magnesium glycinate, omega-3s, and electrolytes, with creatine added if you are strength training to protect muscle.
Are supplements to take with tirzepatide different from semaglutide?
Not meaningfully. The supplements to take with GLP-1 medications are the same across tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) and semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), because both create the same practical situation — reduced intake, rapid loss, slower digestion. Tirzepatide users sometimes lose faster, making muscle preservation especially important.
What vitamins should not be taken with Mounjaro?
None are absolutely off-limits. The genuine cautions are timing and testing: iron at least 4 hours from thyroid medication, fiber supplements 1 to 2 hours from all medications, and high-dose biotin paused 2 to 3 days before lab work. Skip stimulant-heavy fat burner blends entirely, and have your pharmacist review your full list.
Why do compounded GLP-1s pair tirzepatide with B12?
Compounding pharmacies add B12 for practical reasons: it is stable, inexpensive, and supports normal energy metabolism when food intake drops. It is not part of how the medication causes weight loss. Dosing for your specific compound should come from your pharmacy or prescriber.
Do vitamins for GLP-1 users need to be taken forever?
No. Think in phases: foundation nutrition throughout treatment, goal-specific support while the relevant symptom is active, and a reassessment with your provider — ideally with lab work — every several months. Our first 90 days guide maps out when each phase tends to begin.
The bottom line
A good GLP-1 supplement stack is organized by goal: foundation nutrition for everyone, then muscle, energy, hair and skin, or digestive support layered on as your experience dictates. Nothing here replaces the medication, protein, movement, or sleep — it supports the body doing hard work.
